Methodology

How we approach tool design, color accuracy, accessibility, content creation and quality assurance at OmniColor.

Our Approach

OmniColor is built on a simple philosophy: professional color tools should be fast, accurate, private and accessible to everyone. Every decision we make is tested against this philosophy.

This page explains how we approach the different aspects of building OmniColor — from the code we write to the content we publish.

Tool Design Philosophy

Function First

Every tool must actually do what it claims. We do not ship placeholder tools, disabled features or "coming soon" pages. If a tool is listed, it works completely.

No Backend, No Accounts

Every tool runs entirely in your browser. This is not just a technical choice — it is a privacy commitment. Your images, palettes and design work never leave your device.

Fast by Default

We target sub-1-second page loads. Every tool must work instantly, without waiting for network requests. This is why we avoid third-party JavaScript libraries and use vanilla browser APIs.

Mobile-First

Every tool is designed for mobile first, then enhanced for desktop. This means touch-friendly controls, responsive layouts and no critical functionality that requires a mouse.

Color Accuracy

Standards-Based Math

All color conversions use formulas from the W3C CSS Color Module Level 4 specification. These are the same formulas used by Chrome DevTools, Figma, Photoshop and every other professional tool.

No Approximation (Where Possible)

HEX ↔ RGB ↔ HSL ↔ HSV conversions are mathematically exact. We never approximate them. RGB ↔ CMYK is inherently approximate because the two color spaces have different gamuts — we disclose this limitation clearly.

Float Precision

We use floating-point math internally and round only at the final display step. Repeatedly rounding to integers during calculation would accumulate error.

Verification

Every converter is tested against known reference values. For WCAG contrast, we verify against the exact W3C formula — not an approximation.

Accessibility

WCAG 2.2 AA as Baseline

Our own site targets WCAG 2.2 AA compliance. Every page is tested with:

  • Keyboard-only navigation
  • NVDA screen reader (Windows)
  • VoiceOver screen reader (macOS/iOS)
  • Contrast checking with our own tool
  • Zoom testing at 200% and 400%

Reduced Motion

We respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query. Animations are disabled for users who request it.

Screen Reader Support

All interactive tools have proper ARIA labels. Form inputs have associated labels. Dynamic changes are announced via live regions.

Alternative Input Methods

For tools that rely on pointer interaction (color wheels, image pickers), we provide alternative numeric input methods that are fully keyboard accessible.

Content Quality

Original, Not Aggregated

Every article and guide on OmniColor is written from scratch. We do not copy, paraphrase from other sites, or publish near-duplicate content to fill pages.

Human-Reviewed

AI-assisted drafting is allowed as a tool, but every page is reviewed by a human before publication. We do not publish raw AI-generated content.

Technically Verified

Every technical claim is verified against primary sources. Color formulas are checked against W3C specifications. Code examples are tested. Statistics are real, never invented.

Useful, Not Padded

We do not pad content with filler. Every paragraph serves a purpose. A 500-word article that is dense and useful is better than a 2,000-word article that says the same thing three times.

Quality Assurance

Testing Before Release

Every new tool or feature is tested against:

  • Multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • Multiple devices (desktop, tablet, mobile)
  • Multiple screen sizes (320px to 4K)
  • Keyboard navigation
  • Screen reader compatibility
  • Color contrast (WCAG 2.2 AA)
  • Performance (Lighthouse 90+)
  • Console error checks

Continuous Monitoring

After release, we monitor:

  • Bug reports from users
  • Accessibility issues
  • Security vulnerabilities
  • Performance regressions

Corrections Process

When we discover an error or receive a valid correction, we fix it promptly and disclose the correction. See our Corrections Policy for details.

Privacy Approach

Data Minimization

We collect the minimum data necessary to run the site. We do not have accounts, do not store user images, do not track individual users.

Client-Side Everything

All tools process data locally. There is no backend server that receives your images, palettes or design work.

Consent-Based Advertising

Advertising is disabled by default. It only loads when you explicitly accept advertising cookies in our consent banner.

No Tracking Beyond Necessity

We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel or any other third-party tracking. Standard server logs (IP, user-agent, URL) are retained for 30 days for security purposes only.

Performance Standards

Lightweight by Design

OmniColor uses no JavaScript frameworks, no build tools, and no npm dependencies in production. Every byte served is either our own code or a self-hosted font.

Performance Targets

  • Lighthouse Performance: 90+
  • First Contentful Paint: under 1 second
  • Largest Contentful Paint: under 2 seconds
  • Cumulative Layout Shift: under 0.1
  • Interaction to Next Paint: under 200ms

Testing

We test performance on real deployed pages, not just local builds. We report actual measurements, not guaranteed scores.

Open Standards

Compliance

We follow these standards:

  • HTML Living Standard (WHATWG)
  • CSS Color Module Level 4 (W3C)
  • WCAG 2.2 (W3C)
  • WAI-ARIA 1.2 (W3C)
  • ECMAScript 2023 (ECMA International)

Open Source Preference

When we do use third-party tools, we prefer open-source software. Our only open-source dependencies are fonts (Inter, JetBrains Mono) and reference color systems (Tailwind, Bootstrap, Material).

Continuous Improvement

OmniColor is a living project. We iterate continuously based on:

  • User feedback (bug reports, feature requests)
  • Web standards evolution
  • Browser API improvements
  • Accessibility research
  • Performance measurements

See our Changelog for what we have shipped recently, and our Roadmap for what is coming next.
