What Are Dark Colors?
Dark colors have low lightness (10%–30%) but retain meaningful saturation (30%–70%), which distinguishes them from pure black or gray. This means each dark color still has a distinct hue — a dark navy, a deep burgundy, a rich forest green — rather than being neutral.
OmniColor's dark color generator produces five rich dark colors per click. These are the colors used in dark-mode backgrounds, moody branding, cinematic design, premium interfaces and night-themed illustrations.
When to Use Dark Colors
- Dark mode interfaces: Page backgrounds, surface colors, elevated cards.
- Moody branding: Cinematic, premium, luxury, editorial brands.
- Fashion and beauty: High-end cosmetics, fashion labels, packaging.
- Gaming and entertainment: Immersive interfaces and atmospheric design.
- Photography and video: Cinematic color grading and title cards.
- Editorial design: Magazine covers and section dividers.
Best Practices for Dark Palettes
Pure black (#000000) can feel harsh and causes smearing on OLED displays. Prefer very dark tinted hues (L = 8%–15% with hue preserved) for backgrounds. Use a scale from darkest (page background) to lighter darks (surfaces, elevated elements) to create visual layering without hard borders. Always verify text contrast against dark backgrounds — light text needs high contrast, and dark text on dark backgrounds usually fails.
