What Is a Brand Color Palette?

A brand color palette is the set of colors that define a brand's visual identity. Most professional brands use a structured palette: one primary brand color, one or two secondary colors, one accent color, and a set of neutrals. Together they give designers everything needed to build a consistent visual language.

OmniColor's brand palette generator produces a complete seven-color system from a single base color, each with an assigned role — primary, hover, light, secondary, accent, neutral dark and neutral light — so you can go from "I like this blue" to a working brand system in one click.

Role of Each Brand Color

  • Primary: The recognizable brand color — appears in the logo, main CTAs and identity.
  • Primary Dark: Hover and active states for buttons and links.
  • Primary Light: Background tints, tags, selected states.
  • Secondary: A supporting color — different enough to add variety but not compete with the primary.
  • Accent: The attention color — usually complementary, used sparingly for alerts and highlights.
  • Neutral Dark: Body text and icons.
  • Neutral Light: Background surfaces and dividers.

How the Generator Works

Starting from your base color in HSL, OmniColor derives supporting colors using hue rotations (30° for secondary, 180° for accent) and lightness variation (primary dark = base minus 22 lightness, primary light = base plus 22 lightness). Neutrals desaturate the base hue to create warm or cool grays that harmonize with the brand color.

When to Use This Tool

  • New brand identity: Quickly prototype a full brand palette before design refinement.
  • Rebranding: Test alternate base colors against a complete system.
  • Client presentations: Present a structured palette rather than a single color.
  • Design systems: Export tokens to CSS and drop them into your project.
  • Marketing consistency: Give marketing, design and dev the same reference colors.
