Complete CSS Color System
What Is a Color System?
A color system is a structured set of named colors used across a website or product. Unlike a simple palette (a random set of colors), a color system defines the role of each color — primary, secondary, background, surface, border, text, muted text — plus the interaction states (hover, active, disabled) that each role needs. This is what makes a design system scale from one page to hundreds of pages without visual drift.
What Gets Generated
OmniColor generates a complete color system with 10 semantically-named tokens:
- Primary: The brand color — buttons, links, primary actions
- Primary Hover: Slightly darker primary for interaction feedback
- Secondary: Supporting brand color at 150° hue rotation
- Accent: High-attention color for highlights and alerts
- Background: Page background — near-white with subtle hue tint
- Surface: Cards and panels — slightly darker than background
- Border: Subtle divider color
- Text: Body text color
- Text Muted: Secondary text color
- Text Inverse: White or near-white for primary-colored surfaces
Uses of a Color System
- Design systems: A single reference that keeps every component visually consistent.
- Themes: Enables dark/light mode by swapping tokens.
- Marketing: Ensures brand consistency across every channel.
- Developer handoff: Named tokens make it easy to implement consistently.
