What Is a Lighter Color?

A lighter color is created by increasing the lightness of a base color in HSL. This is the design term "tint" — mixing a color with white. Unlike adding white directly in RGB, adjusting HSL lightness preserves the hue relationship and produces cleaner tints that still read as the same color.

When to Use Lighter Colors

  • Backgrounds: A 90% lighter tint of your brand color makes a perfect soft surface.
  • Hover states (inverted): Some modern designs use light tints for hover instead of darkening.
  • Highlight backgrounds: For code blocks, blockquotes and callout backgrounds.
  • Cards and panels: Slight tints create visual layering without hard borders.
  • Disabled states: Light tints signal "unavailable" without greying out entirely.
