What Is Color Difference?

Color difference measures how distinguishable two colors are to the human eye. It is essential for brand consistency (making sure two "brand blue" instances match), for image quality control, and for accessibility (making sure elements are visually distinguishable). Simple RGB distance is one measure, but perceptual distance (Delta E) better matches how the eye actually sees differences.

The Three Metrics

  • Delta E (Perceptual): Based on the CIE Lab color space — the standard measure of color difference. Below 1 is imperceptible; 1–2 is barely noticeable; above 10 is clearly different.
  • RGB Distance: A weighted Euclidean distance in RGB space (redmean formula) that approximates perceptual difference more closely than plain Euclidean distance.
  • Similarity (%): A normalized 0–100% score where 100% means identical and 0% means maximally different (black vs white).

Delta E Interpretation

  • < 1: Imperceptible — the human eye cannot distinguish.
  • 1 – 2: Only noticeable side by side.
  • 2 – 10: Perceptible at a glance.
  • 10 – 20: Clearly different colors.
  • 20 – 50: Substantially different.
  • > 50: Very different hues.
