What Is an Online Color Picker?
An online color picker is a browser-based tool that lets you visually choose a color and instantly see its value in every common format — HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK. Designers, developers, marketers, students and hobbyists use color pickers daily to pick a shade for a website, brand, image, presentation or print project.
OmniColor's color picker runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. No file uploads, no data collection, no signup. Whatever color you pick stays on your device.
How to Use the Color Picker
- Pick a hue. Click or drag along the hue slider (the horizontal rainbow bar) to select the base hue, from 0° (red) through 360°.
- Set saturation and brightness. Click anywhere inside the large square. The X-axis controls saturation (left = gray, right = vivid), the Y-axis controls brightness (top = bright, bottom = dark).
- Adjust opacity. Drag the second slider to set alpha (0% transparent to 100% opaque). The preview updates live.
- Copy any format. Use the Copy buttons next to HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK to copy the value to your clipboard.
- Fine-tune manually. Type an exact HEX, RGB or HSL value directly into the inputs. Everything stays in sync.
- Save favorites. Click "Save Favorite" to bookmark a color. Recent colors are saved automatically.
Supported Color Formats
HEX: A six-digit code like #155EEF. Two hex digits each for red, green and blue. Compact, standardized, and the default in HTML and CSS.
RGB: Three integers from 0–255 for red, green and blue. Common in JavaScript and canvas work.
HSL: Hue (0–360°), saturation (0–100%) and lightness (0–100%). More intuitive to adjust than RGB because the three properties map to what you actually see.
HSV: Hue, saturation and value. Similar to HSL but uses "value" instead of lightness. Common in Photoshop-style color pickers.
CMYK: Cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Used exclusively in print. Screen RGB and print CMYK are different color spaces, so exact 1:1 conversion is not possible — the values are approximate.
Accuracy of Color Conversion
OmniColor uses the standard sRGB color space and exact formulas for HEX ↔ RGB, RGB ↔ HSL, RGB ↔ HSV and RGB ↔ CMYK conversions. The results match what you get in Chrome DevTools, Figma, Photoshop and most design tools.
Common Use Cases
- Picking a brand color for a website, logo or app.
- Converting a HEX value to RGB for JavaScript code.
- Finding HSL values to build a color system with tokens.
- Checking whether a color meets WCAG contrast requirements.
- Sampling colors from a design to reuse them.
- Teaching color theory by exploring hue, saturation and lightness.
