What Is an HSV Color Picker?
An HSV (also called HSB) color picker lets you choose colors using three properties: hue (the color, 0-360°), saturation (how vivid, 0-100%) and value or brightness (how light, 0-100%). HSV is the color model used by Photoshop's color square, Figma's picker and every browser's native color input.
HSV vs HSL
HSV and HSL share hue and saturation but differ in their third axis:
- HSV value: 0% = black, 100% = fully bright color. Drag down to darken toward black.
- HSL lightness: 0% = black, 50% = pure color, 100% = white. Drag down to darken toward black, up to lighten toward white.
Because V only goes toward black, HSV maps naturally to the vertical axis of a picker — which is why tools use it.
