What Is a Color Count Tool?
A color count tool analyzes an image and reports how many unique colors it contains. This is useful for understanding image complexity, verifying that a logo uses only the colors it should, checking PNG compression quality, or determining whether an image will quantize well.
Understanding the Results
- Total pixels: The full count of visible pixels (transparent pixels excluded).
- Unique colors: How many distinct RGB values appear in the image. Photographs contain thousands; flat illustrations contain dozens.
- Color diversity: The ratio of unique colors to total pixels, expressed as a percentage. A photograph might have 5% diversity; a flat icon might have 0.01%.
- Top colors: The 20 most common colors ranked by pixel count — useful for spotting dominant colors.
