What Is a Color Explorer?
A color explorer is an interactive grid for browsing the full color spectrum by controlling hue, saturation and lightness. Instead of browsing an arbitrary palette, you narrow in on a specific region of color space and see all the colors available within those constraints.
OmniColor's color explorer shows a grid where each row is a hue step and each column is a lightness step, all at your chosen saturation. This lets you see how a single hue family shifts from very light to very dark — and how colors relate across adjacent hues.
How to Use the Color Explorer
- Adjust the hue range to focus on the colors you are interested in.
- Set the saturation — low for muted tones, high for vivid.
- Set the lightness range to control how dark/light the grid goes.
- Choose the number of steps per axis for grid density.
- Click any cell to copy its HEX code.
Uses of the Explorer
- Design systems: Find the right shade for a design token by exploring a full hue family.
- Palette research: Discover colors you would not have picked from a palette generator.
- Learning color theory: See how hue, saturation and lightness interact in a single grid.
- Finding color substitutes: When you need a slightly different version of a color you already have.
