Extracted Palette
What Is Color Palette From Image?
Color palette from image is a workflow that extracts a set of colors from a photograph, illustration or design file. It is one of the most widely-used color workflows in design because it lets you build a palette that matches an existing visual reference — a photograph, product image or piece of art — rather than starting from abstract color theory.
OmniColor's tool analyzes the image's visible pixels and returns the 10 most prominent colors as HEX codes. Every color is copy-ready, so you can drop it directly into your design tool, CSS or brand guide.
When to Use Palette From Image
- Web design: Build a site palette that matches the hero image.
- Interior design: Extract the color scheme of a reference room.
- Illustration: Get a starting palette from reference art.
- Packaging: Coordinate labels and boxes with product photography.
- Brand identity: Derive brand colors from a founder's personal reference image.
- Editorial: Match magazine layouts to feature photography.
How It Works
The image is downscaled to 100×100 pixels on a canvas, and each visible pixel is sampled. Colors are bucketed into 32-step RGB ranges, and the 10 buckets with the highest pixel counts become the extracted palette. Transparent pixels are ignored, so transparent PNGs work correctly.
Privacy
Everything runs in your browser using the Canvas API. No image is ever uploaded to a server, no analytics are collected, and the tool works fully offline once loaded.
