What Is Color Alpha?

Alpha is the transparency component of a color. In CSS it is expressed in two standard formats: as a decimal in rgba() and hsla(), or as a two-digit hex byte in 8-digit HEX. Alpha 0 is fully transparent; alpha 1 (or FF) is fully opaque.

Common Alpha Values and Uses

  • 0.05 – 0.10: Very subtle tint overlays, hover backgrounds.
  • 0.15 – 0.25: Card backgrounds, subtle elevation, disabled states.
  • 0.40 – 0.60: Modal backdrops, glass effects, primary overlays.
  • 0.75 – 0.90: Image overlays for text readability, dark scrims.
  • 0.95 – 1.00: Near-opaque surfaces, watermarks.
