What Is Color Opacity?
Opacity (also called alpha) controls how transparent a color is. At 100% the color is fully visible; at 0% it is invisible. Opacity is essential for modern UI patterns like overlay tints, glassmorphism, modal backdrops, disabled states and layered cards.
In CSS, opacity can be expressed two ways:
- RGBA:
rgba(21, 94, 239, 0.5)— alpha as a decimal 0–1. - 8-digit HEX:
#155EEF80— alpha as a hex byte 00–FF.
When to Use Opacity
- Overlays: Dark or light overlays on hero images to improve text readability.
- Disabled states: Reduced opacity signals unavailability.
- Glassmorphism: Semi-transparent surfaces with backdrop blur.
- Layered cards: Subtle transparency creates visual depth.
- Watermarks and backgrounds: Very low-opacity text or logos.
