What Is an Eyedropper Color Picker?

An eyedropper color picker lets you sample colors from anywhere on your screen — a photograph, another application, a design file, a website, anything visible. Unlike a color picker that only works with its own canvas, an eyedropper samples from your entire display.

How the EyeDropper API Works

The browser EyeDropper API is a native browser capability that lets web pages request the ability to sample screen pixels. When you click the eyedropper button, the browser takes over: your cursor becomes an eyedropper, and clicking any pixel returns the sampled sRGB color. This works in Chromium browsers and Safari 17+.

Browser Support

  • Supported: Chrome 95+, Edge 95+, Opera 81+, Brave, Safari 17+
  • Not supported: Firefox (as of 2026), older browsers

If your browser does not support the EyeDropper API, this tool will show a message and disable the pick button. Use our image color picker or pixel color picker as alternatives.

Privacy

The EyeDropper API is designed for privacy. When you use it, the browser controls the sampling — the web page (OmniColor) does not see your screen contents. Only the final sampled color is returned to us, and only after you click.
